Program Background

In accordance with Public Law 110-456, the United States National Parks Quarter Program is a multi-year initiative to honor 56 national parks and other national sites in each state, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories—the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Under this program, five new reverse designs will appear on the quarter-dollar each year beginning in 2010 and through 2021.
The coins will be issued in the order in which the featured site was first established as a national park or site.

Design

  • The United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program designs will be displayed on the reverse (tails) of the quarters, while the obverse (heads) will bear the familiar "restored" 1932 John Flanagan image of George Washington.
  • The designs will be developed through a consultative process involving the governor or other chief executive of each host jurisdiction, the U.S. Department of the Interior and U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, and will be selected after review by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.
  • The Secretary of the Treasury will approve all final designs.
