Just received a 1973 D nickel in AU. Looks really sharp, I wonder if some kid got into someones collection. Either way it fills a hole in my Level 3 20th Century set so in it goes.

Also got a 1948 wheat cent (looks to be VF). Funny, wheaties in change use to be common but lately they seem more like a rarity.

A friend of mine brought this back from Poland. It was so small for a modern coin I had to take a pic of it next to a U.S. cent as its about half the size.

Last week, I got back a silver 1953 one krona coin in my change. What makes that a unique find is that they have not had silver in coins since 1968. Just about every silver coin has been pulled out of circulation by the Swedish mint or by people. It was a rare find indeed. I know of only one other person who has had such a find in the past few years.

I found a 1918 buffalo nickel in a roll of nickels from the bank last week. It's in good condition and somewhat corroded. Most of the corrosion has a reddish appearance like rust (iron oxide). Anyone know why that would be?

Neat find, I wonder what the rust like stuff is? I know nickel can turn black in the right conditions…maybe its acidic?

Been asking around and I can't seem to get a clear answer on the rust-like condition. Folks gave me lots of feedback but zippo to this one. Since it's a low grade buffalo with nothing to loose I recommend throwing it into a small cup of cooking oil (olive oil works best).

Let it sit a few days and see what happens. One idea I do have is that it may not be corrosion but a water droplet(s) from something else that was rusting away very badly and when the droplet dried it made the rust like color.

It seems too even to be from dripping. Perhaps it was in water with something iron. Here is a scan of the obverse. You will notice that there are some small spots of copper oxide as well as the coating of "rust."

Yep water with iron is the culprit here
