New Coin Pickups

Had a great day at the mailbox today. Here are the new additions I picked up for my level 3 20th century type set:

1916D Barber Quarter (XF) - $41
1968D Kennedy Half (BU) - $2
1965 Dime BU - $1
1965 Quarter - $1.50

Funny thing I bid on two Barber quarters and actually won both so in a few days I'll actually have two Barber quarters (Doh!). I also realize that these are missing photo's in the photo guide so when I get a chance I'll take some photo's and update the guides.

Yesterday was a big day. I finally broke down and got two of the few remaining coins that I need to finish a 1840 to Today U.S. Type Set collection of XF+ graded coins. Wow, this is getting to be an expensive undertaking. Almost all are MS-63 plus with a few AU and XF thrown in. I've been holding off on the Seated Liberty Dollar and Twenty Cent piece but it seems that prices are going to get any lower. Here are my recent additions:

1875 S 20 cent
PCGS XF40

1871 Seated Dollar
NGC XF40

Nice pickups! I can't believe your going for an XF+ set. Putting the costs aside, that's going to be one beautiful set. You going for gold coins too?

Eventually I will go for the gold, but for now I only have one-third of the gold I need but it's ungraded. This originally started out as a Coins of the Cowboys type set but that got expanded. I am also working on a U.S. coins with a native Amercian theme. I just picked up a Jamestown commemorative a few months ago to add to that collection. I have picked up most of the graded coins along the way with the Cowboy type set in mind. I believe they will hold their value so it is not money out the window, but money put aside that I can take out and look at whenever I want.

Well I finally picked up my last coin to complete a 20th Century Level 3 type set. A 1916-D Obv MM half in fine condition! Whew, never thought I'd finish but it is done.

Besides this being the last coin for my type set it's the last coin for the photo guides. Hopefully I'll find time and update the site with the latest photo guides.

We'll time to move on to a new set…I'm torn between a 20th century set from Ireland, Canada, or Poland. I'm sure it'll work itself out.

I was looking for the 1871 dollar coin and I found it in Romania, but there is a slight problem. the eagle doesn't have the motto "in god we trust" above him. can you tell me if it's a fake coin? I am an amateur and have many coins. Please RE:

I'm assuming its a seated-liberty-dollar and if that is the case then there is no "In God We Trust" motto on the coin. 1871 is a common coin but older silver dollars are always questionable to their authenticity so it is always good to do some checks. And there are some basic checks even an amateur can do:

1. The Magnet Test - place a magnet near the coin, if the magnet is attracted to it then it is fake.
2. Weigh the Coin - silver dollars for this time period weigh about 26.7 grams
3. Measure the Coin - should be 38.1 mm
4. Compare to Photos - there are lots of sites with fairly large images, take your time and compare your coin to those. also highly recommend using a magnify glass during this step.

Went to the New Haven Coin Show today and walked out happy. I picked up some nice circulated Buffalo & Liberty nickels but my big win for the day was a slightly toned 1921 Peace $ in XF for $135. Not the best price in town but it was an attractive coin so I grabbed it when I saw it.

With the rising cost of gold… I finally had to break down and get one of the coins I have been holding off on because of the cost. I recently purchased a $3 Indian Princess AU53 NGC. I now have just two coins left for my certified Gold Coin collection. I'm debating adding the Golden Eagle and Buffalo Gold to the collection. Any thoughts?

Just two….wow way to go! Golden Eagle & Buffalo gold though official coinage are really intended to be bullion investments of which you are probably aware of and thus the debate. From a numismatic point of view the classic gold coins have a better upside to increase in value beyond their bullion content.

If you open the door to modern U.S. gold coinage then I guess the next question is why not commemorative gold coins? It is also non-circulating coinage and you may be tempted to add some. If it was me, I'd probably split it up into two sets:

1. Classic U.S. Gold Coins
2. Modern U.S. Gold Coins

I just finished a new type set that I am pretty excited about. When I was a kid, I visited the Federal Reserve Bank in New York. I just finished collecting an uncirculated $1 bank note from each of the twelve federal reserve banks. It just took a little persistence and trading with some coin collector friends scattered around the country.
