The U.S. is not the only country wrestling with the idea of whether or not to eliminate coins due to production costs. I'll try to list what countries are making those tough calls and will be yanking small coinage from their mint facilities due to costs:

Denmark
25 Ore - minting stopped as of October 1, 2008

Fiji
1 cent - minting stopped later in 2008
2 cent - minting stopped later in 2008

Hungary
1 forint - minting stopped as of March 2008
2 forint - minting stopped as of March 2008

Serbia
50 para - minting stopped as of 2008

United Arab Emirates
1 fil - minting stopped later in 2008
5 fil - minting stopped later in 2008
10 fil - minting stopped later in 2008
