Problem with Coin Inventory template...

Lately when opening the Coin Inventory template 2.0 and after the links to the bullion prices update, it is putting the Platinum price in the Gold cell, the Palladium price in the Silver cell, and the Platinum and Palladium cells have #REF! in them instead of the current price. I don't know what is wrong as I am a spreadsheet novice. Thought I should let you know. Thanks!!!!

Thanks Chuck,

My computer with excel is down right now. But my laptop has openoffice and everything looked fine. You may have simply modified a cell by accident as those fields are not protected.

Until I can verify using MS excel I'd recommend downloading a second copy of the template and transferring your files to the new file using copy rows and then use paste insert functions.

Thanks for your quick reply. I need to clarify: I have both OpenOffice (Version 3.2.1) and Microsoft Office (Version 2003) on my computer. I was having the problem with both of them. I downloaded a fresh copy of it and now I only have to problem in OpenOffice. When I open it in OpenOffice I get the following message: "This file contains links to other files. Should they be updated? [Yes] [No]". When I open it in Microsoft Office, I get: "This workbook contains queries to external data that refresh automatically… [Enable Automatic Refresh] [Disable Automatic Refresh]". I am guessing these 2 dialogs are doing the same thing. The behavior I am getting now makes me think it may be a OpenOffice problem?

They do both mean the same thing. I have discovered that Open Office does have some quirks with list lookups and after your experience it seems to not convert Excel files that have web lookups as well so yet another issue.

I created a new template strictly for Open Office and will post on the site shortly. This should resolve current problems. Have to thank you again for finding the issue.

Not a problem on finding the issue. Glad to help!! Yeah, OpenOffice is great software, but every now and then you run into something that it just does differently or won't do like M$ Office will. But I like the price of OpenOffice better…. :)

BTW, Thank you so much for the Coin Inventory template. It is awesome!!! Earlier today I joined your site and added it to my bookmarks. Looks like there is alot of great info on there.

Ken: I downloaded the U.S. Coin Inventory Version 2.0 OpenOffice Template. What I get is a .zip file with several directories in it, along with several .xml files, and a few other types of files. I wasn't sure what to do with all of these files, or if these files were actually the files that were supposed to be contained within the .zip itself. Thanks!

Wow, that is the weirdest thing. If you download using Firefox as a browser there are no problems and same with Google Chrome, but if you are using MS Explorer it downloads a zip with useless files.

Did a little digging and it is an issue throughout the web with Explorer and it can be resolved individually (one server at a time) which I'll shoot the issue over to my web provider. The better answer would be for M$ to play nice but I'm sure they are in no hurry to accommodate competition.

BTW, I highly recommend downloading Google Chrome, for everyday surfing it can't be beat. It's fast, clean and easy. Every so often you run into a site where Explorer or Firefox is required and when that happens I just load that site with one of those browsers.

In the meantime, you did use the "contact" link earlier so I have your personal e-mail so I'll just e-mail the file to you.

One more follow up….

I'm thrilled you enjoy the site and became a member. This originally started out as a place for me to share stuff and over the years it has grown into a true wiki resource. We have 242 articles with 187 of those providing coin descriptions.

As a member you now have access to create & edit pages. Our goal for this year was to reach 200 coin descriptions and since we are only 13 away the goal looks good.

Thanks again, Ken. I do have Google Chrome installed but mainly use IE. I like Chrome, except that it doesn't have a print preview like IE does.. As soon as they add that feature I may have to make that switch. My 17 year old son uses Chrome exclusively.
