I am using the "coin" spreadsheet on both of my computers. The one running Windows 2007 seems to be working well, however, for some reason whenever I save a spreadsheet it goes to recent documents and not into the Excel Document files. Why ?

On my second computer, I am running Windows XP and I cannot get the programs to work. I would like to use this computer as my backup. Help……

You are having compatibility issues. When you started the file in 2007 it automatically saved it in a new file format that office 2003 cannot use. Try doing a "save as" and choose excel 97/2003 and it should clear up your problems.

I have inherited a coin collection and need to inventory it. I've downloaded the coin inventory template, but can't figure out how to use it. Could you give me a quick primer?

Hi Alex,

Most of the sheet is manually entered and you will need some eventual numismatic knowledge to fill-out some of the fields but the good thing is that the fields are not mandatory so you can leave them blank. That said let's walk though a quick example;

1. The first coin you pick-up is a 1930 cent. So your first entry in column A is 1930.
2. Next is a mint mark (a D or S near the date) but there is no mint mark which means it was minted in Philadelphia so now go to column B and choose the dropdown menu item for Philadelphia.
3. In column C (using the dropdown) choose the denomination, in this case .01 for cent
4. Column D is the grade of the coin and until you learn grading I recommend leaving blank. Meanwhile column E is quantity and since it is 1 coin you enter 1.
5. The last column to fill-out is type or column F. Since it is a 1930s penny then you would enter "Lincoln Wheat Cent"
6. An optional column to add notes is available in column O but again this is optional.

That is pretty much it. The other fields can be filled out later (or not at all) as you gain more knowledge on collecting coins. Also I'd recommend picking up Redbooks "A Guide Book of United States Coins" at your local bookstore.
