In short vingette format (3-5 pages per coin) this book provides a short discussion of how each of the designs in the 50 state quarter program was selected.

another in the Whitman "The Offical Red Book" Series. This book is a wonderful recap of the history of the country in general and the Coin Buisness in particular of the time that Morgan dollars were being produced (1878 to 1921)

Yes this book is from 1977 but I couldn’t resist picking it used for $3.95 when I saw Norman Stack (one of the founders of “Stack’s” from New York) was the author.

It reads like a High School or College level history text book, minus the end of chapter summary questions. It's the type of book I'd expect to see for a class labeled "An Introduction to Coinage and Numismatic History" and would recommend this for new collectors starting around the age of 15 or older.
