The bill that commissioned (authorized) coinage and the search for a coin design was not signed by Theodore Roosevelt until 1902 so having a coin with that year is questionable. I am by far no expert on Philippine coinage but the timing seems to be off, if I had to guess you have a very good modification from a true coin minted 1903 to 1908.

Without seeing the coin there may be another possibility. Is it the exact same coin design, legend, size, and weight? If not it is possible that it was a trial piece that was used during the selection process by the U.S. Mint.

Hello,

In 2010 I corresponded briefly with the English numismatic artist, designer and sculptor, Norman Sillman. He is correctly credited with designed the reverses of Zambia's pre-decimal and first decimal coins. Because I had never heard of D.A.H. Byatt, I asked if he knew who he was. Mr Sillman was amused to hear that Mr Byatt was supposed to be an artist. In fact, he was merely a cvil servant at the Royal Mint, which in those days was still based in London. Mr Sillman told me that he himself most definitely designed the Kaunda portrait, of which he is very proud. I forwarded Mr Sillman's words to the Standard Catalog of World Coins, and they changed the name of the designer of the Kaunda portrait to Norman Sillman, both in their catalogue and on their website, Numismaster.

The help would be greatly appreciated! There are few sites dedicated to French coinage. As far as creating pages, if you can type then your in, I can help with special edits and formatting. There is a box at the bottom of the left menu (Add a New Page) just type in the name of page then click the new page button and give a test run to see how hard or easy it is. Remember you have to be logged in to do this.

After that there was a silver 50 F Hercules (1974-1980) and a silver 100 F Pantheon (1982-1988… for circulation, there were more up to 2001 but for collectors only). So France did issue silver circulating coins pretty late, despite the price of the metal. Of course, those coins did not circulate much, but were preferably thesaurised. Tons of them are now foundable on the market, so their value is not high, except keys such as the 50 F 1980 (mintage 100 000, present value ca 120 $ ) or the seldom 100 F 1996 (mintage 2000 only, present value ca 1000 $).

Thanks for the feedback lutecium94 and welcome to the site!

19th & early 20th century French sculptures have long influenced coin design and were inspirational to so many artist of that time.

The page is actually dedicated to a specific type of coin and not so much the Sower design. I agree the design has been used on different denominations & compositions over the years and it would be interesting to see how the design has evolved to accommodate new composition (like nickel) and modern high speed coin presses with lower reliefs. Unfortunately my coin write-ups are limited to what coins I actually have and can take photos of (I make it a point not to pirate pics).

Currently I am working on coins of Mexico but have made a note revisit this topic as you have piqued by interest :) The cool thing about this site is it is very open and by being a member you have access to change any page or even create pages. It really is for collectors to create as much info to share with other collectors.

Hope you enjoy the site & thanks again for the idea,

Ken
